Welcome to my Business Essentials class!

A class web site can be a creative way of getting students excited about a subject, keeping them up to date on assignments, and providing them with valuable online resources. Because a class site should be engaging, I will try to present information to go along with each text chapter that makes the subject interesting and fun. Of course, I will include information on Web links we will use in class so students can revisit and explore additional materials available and other related links at their on pace.

Again, I will change the content for the appropriate text chapter as we progress through the semester.

Reading Assignments for this Chapter
Chapter 7--Management and Leadership

Please have the chapter read prior to class.  This will ensure that you are at least familiar with the basic content.

In Section 1, we will explore what management is and study the five basic functions or roles of managers in today's office.  We will also look at the graphic representation of the levels of management in a typical office--the organizational chart.  In our discussion and study, we will visit Web sites on the origin of this tool and the benefits it offers managers in modern management application.

In Section 2, we will study the need for leadership skills in the workplace and the characteristics of effective leaders.  We willl use an excellent set of resources from the lesson entitled, "Generations that Work," from the Web site for Work-Based Learning Connections.  Through this site and related links, we will explore the many generations represented in schools and in the workplace.  Each generation has been shaped by different experiences and values, and the given generations bring challenges to the job and to the human relations managers.  Knowing more about who we are and why we react or act as we do has strong implications for success in working cooperatively with classmates or fellow employees on the job.

One of our projects will be to select a leader of your choice.  You will research this leader and prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the reason(s) for this person's success.  You will receive specific instructions in class when we reach this point in the study of Chapter 7.

Finally, in Section 3, we will study ethical management and the components of ethical decision making in business and in our personal lives.

In the News

Watch the newspaper and the daily news broadcasts.  Bring to class any related story on management, leadership, or business ethics.  We will include this on our bulletin board for Current Business Topics.

If you know someone in a management or leadership role, invite them to class to share their experiences with us.  Braves pitcher, Tim Hudson, will visit our class to talk to us about his role as a leader both on the pitching mound and in the area of volunteer work here in the Atlanta area.

Extra Credit!

What was the original design of the first organizational chart?

Hint--It was said to have originated with the Egyptians and the building of the pyramids.

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions or comments on my site.
